Retaining walls provide significant benefits, not only from their
ascetic beauty which can improve the value of your home, but also to prevent
erosion and control drainage.
At
Champion, we build our retaining walls to last using quality materials. One
popular option is a timber wall. Normally we use 6X6 cut timbers to construct
our timber walls. We also use "Dead-Men" and cross men to provide support so
our walls are built strong. "Dead-Men" is a term that is used for a Timber that
is placed at 90 degrees to the wall structure to provide maximum strength and
attach the wall securely into the embankment. Wherever possible full length
Timbers are to be used as Dead-Men. We also secure the bottom timber with 3'
rebar to help reinforce the bottom timber. All of these things produce a
structurally sound wall that will last a long time.
Other popular options for wall construction are brick and stone.
Constructing walls with these type of materials provides added benefit because
they last much longer and are not as susceptible to rot due to the weather
elements. There are many types of stone that can be used to create different
looks for walls. Some stone can give a wall a more natural look and others a
more formal look. A Champion representative would be happy to consult with you
to determine the best type of material based upon your property and personal
preference. Stone walls have an advantage in that they can be constructed in
either a straight or curved form factor. Columns on either end of the walls can
provide a nice finish. Incorporating a combination of these ideas into a wall
design can give your property a very appealing look. Call a Champion
Representative now for an estimate.
 Brick can
give a very formal look to the property, and is typically used for straight
wall applications. Whether brick or stone is used to construct the wall,
drainage is always a major consideration at Champion. In many cases with less
experienced companies this is overlooked, leading to major problems down the
road. At Champion, we work with height of the wall to construct it just
slightly below the grade of the dirt. This is important because otherwise water
could stand behind the wall and eventually push the wall over. Water may not
seem very heavy -(it's actually 8.3 lbs per gallon) but when there are
potentially 400 or 500 gallons of water pushing on the wall, it can cause the
wall to lean and possibly fall over. Lastly, footings for brick and stone walls
are important. The footing is the foundation for the wall. For strength and
durability purposes we construct them out of cement, and if the wall will be a
certain hight, we install vertical pieces while the footing is being poured to
give the wall extra strength and durability. Call us today for a quote!
